LOOK AT ME!
SELF PORTRAIT
Let’s make a self-portrait out of mixed-media! Your students will begin by sketching a portrait of themselves before transforming their drawing to a multimedia format, composed of paint, coloured paper, and oil pastels.
Students will learn about the proportion of the human face and how to use various lines to create shapes. They will then explore colour mixing and how colour is used to complete the piece. What is the difference between warm and cool colours? How do contrasting colours create emphasis and intensity?
At the end of the workshop, your students will feel more confident in their ability to express themselves through visual art and diverse media; and they will have a vibrant, colourful, self-portrait to bring home!

SKETCh, & CREATE WITh CLAY!
CLAY BUTTERFLIES
Let’s sketch beautiful butterflies on paper and then bring them to life with paint and clay! Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night provides the inspiration for this enjoyable, multimedia workshop.
Your students will delve into clay, learning how to slab, roll, score and slip this soft material to create the simple organic shape for their insect. Just as Van Gogh used texture to create visual interest in his paintings, your students will use conventional and non-conventional art materials to create texture for their imagined butterfly. They will also use the element of contrast in their piece to reflect either light/dark, large/small, or pure/mixed.
At the conclusion of the workshop, your students
will share their creations with their classmates, providing the opportunity for constructive criticism and allowing them to showcase how they transformed simple, organic shapes into vibrant, colourful butterflies!

COLOuR,TExTuRE, PATTERN!
PAINTED WOOD BLOCKS
Inspired by the vivid, abstract action paintings of Jackson Pollock, your students will create a patterned art piece that evokes emotion and meaning by delving into the use of texture, colour and contrast.
They will explore the colour wheel, colour mixing and learn about line, repetition and contrast to create a pattern. Using non-conventional tools such as paper clips and combs, students will create these pattern designs with paint on wood panel. They will reflect and explore different possibilities and combinations. For example, how would a different colour or texture change the mood of my piece?
Just as Pollock’s use of unique techniques, texture and expressive movement resulted in the creation of master works, your students will explore these same elements and techniques to create their own meaningful work of art!
