JUNIOR WORKSHOPS

STRIKE A POSE
FIGURE SCULPTURES

Junior (Grades 4, 5, & 6)

Taking inspiration from the powerful sculptures of English artist, Henry Moore, and the forefather of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin, let’s create a bronze-like statue out of some very non-conventional art materials!

In this multi-faceted and multimedia workshop, your students will first use their critical thinking skills to develop a concept for a dynamic pose and then experiment with gesture drawings to capture the action and movement of the subject and pose chosen. Using only wire, tin foil, masking tape and two paint colours, they will create three-dimensional works of art that express feelings and ideas inspired by their own hobbies and interests, such as a dance pose or an action in sport, with a bronze effect.

By the end of the workshop, your students will have learned how form can evoke feeling and portray a subject; and they will have created a proportionate, unique sculpture that they can proudly display at home!

This workshop can be extended into a full-day session, allowing for further exploration. Angel sculptures can be substituted for the human figures at Christmas time.

FORM AND FLOW
COPPER SCULPTURES

Junior (Grades 4, 5, & 6)

Nature and organic forms will inspire your students to create a fluid sculpture. Learning about Picasso’s line drawings and the fluid paintings of First Nations artist, Carl Ray, your students will discover how lines, form and space are used to create linear drawings that then transfer to a 3-D copper tube sculpture!

Students will begin with brush felt tip line drawings and subsequently evaluate which sketch will result in the best-possible 3D sculpture. Students must consider elements of science and physics to ensure that their sculpture balances on its own and allows water to flow on or through it.They will also observe how the refraction and reflection of light affect the appearance of the object. Your students will also learn about the use of line and Pablo Picasso.

At the conclusion of the workshop, your students will share their creations with their classmates, providing the opportunity for constructive criticism and allowing them to showcase how they transformed unconventional materials into a unique, 3D copper sculpture that exhibits water flow!

Junior (Grades 4, 5, & 6)

Your students will be inspired by typography, type designers and the fine nuances of typeface to best represent themselves through type. What’s in a name? They will use type to create their own word mark of their full name.

Your students will learn how type is used in advertising and branding every day, both in traditional print format as well as online media. Drawing upon the techniques of famous type designers Max Miedinger, John Baskerville and Carol Twombly, the artist in the classroom will teach your students about letter forms and what makes an effective word mark. Using the font of their choice, students will showcase their name in an original word mark. These marks will be printed with an Andy Warhol inspired style, sure to make a lasting impression.

At the conclusion of the workshop, your students will share their creations with their classmates, providing the opportunity for constructive criticism and allowing them to demonstrate how their personality is expressed through their word mark; and they will have a unique, colourful art piece to bring home!
